performance term by Elios Schastél

At the age of eighteen years I went on my first independent journey through countries of Europe. On the journeys that I made during the following years there had been conversations with other humen where there developed problems due to linguistic differences at the beginning. I started to convey my thoughts by making performative movements that based on imaginations until we started to understand each other. I often gained the experience that there had been problems when I tried to make somebody understand my objects of performanes. Sometimes there was also a missing will to understand the performances and some people did not even know the meaning and the idea of my performative actions. In the course of a practical learning process of kinds of performances I tried to understand and use methods of performances on different levels of abstraction because I wanted to be understood by possibly all receivers of my messages independent of their cultural context and the meaning languages of their culture. After my last journey to Laos I had the possibility to speak with people from other cultures due to the performative actions that I used when making a communication though I did not know their language at all. Due to these and more experiences I started to reflect the cultural meaning languages and conventions of the culture where I grew up from a distanced perspective. After several years I wrote an article about the performance term.

historical development of the performance – an introduction

Since artists have existed among the humen there have been performances that have been made on the basis of the artistic process. In a mystical knowledge process where humen made a communicative exchange with esoteric contents there developed processings of the mystical experiences by abstractions like for example movements and symbols. The mystical knowledge process of the performance was the cause for the development of sciences, acting methods, dance styles, reli-gions, crafts ecetera. After the artistic act and the performance that was connected with it was recognized and it had become a reproducing craft there developed the convention and finally there developed the obligation to demonstrate a convention. Conventional actions and demonstrations are the opposites of the artistic mystical act and the performance.

comments

A.) During the last years I have made artistic performances. Due to the use of meaning languages that came from outside the universe the messages of my performances had often not been understood by the receiver.

B.) The level of abstraction decides about the level of the performance. The highest level of abstraction in a performance results from the imagination of an esoteric object that is possibly far away from the performer. The more the object of the performance is away from the performer or the more abstract it is the higher is the intelligence of the performance. Furthermore if the performer is also able to explain the contents of his performance to other humen the more intelligent he is. Performances strengthen the inner being and the single levels of consciousness. They make the inner maturation process possible.

examples of a performance term that is used wrongly

  • use of social conventions and the compliance with social norms
  • benefit-oriented thinking
  • self-presentation and demonstration
  • distortion of the reality
  • different understanding of performance objects due to different associations of the viewers due to levels of abstraction that are too high

levels of abstraction of a performance

animalistic demonstration

  • e.g. up and down dualism
  • e.g. corners of the mouse move upward = good, corners of the mouse move downward = bad

self-presentation

  • e.g. making pretty is a striking demonstration of natural beauty

performances on universal levels of abstraction/ human meaning languages

  • e.g. symbols of Christian religion
  • e.g. basic meaning languages of tai chi
  • e.g. colour symbolism of the Far Eastern philosophy of consciousness levels

performances on levels of abstraction that are outside of the universe

  • e.g. moon walk by Michael Jackson
  • e.g. dance rhetoric by Pina Bausch
  • e.g. meaning languages of the Guernica by Picasso
